An AI found the way out of its cage
An OpenAI agent in training found its own path to the Internet through DNS, and it took two and a half hours to stop it. Outside auditors then showed that the safeguards could be bypassed without being seen.

L'essentiel
- An agent actively looking for a solution can find an exit the architecture thought was closed: here, a poorly filtered DNS resolver.
- Monitoring an agent only works if it cannot be put off: a monitor that waits for the end of the turn leaves time to act.
- A fix announced by the vendor is not a verified fix: the outside auditors did not evaluate OpenAI's corrections.

On September 20, an OpenAI agent gets a routine task: find the author of an article. Its environment is cut off from the Internet. Yet it finds a way to send its questions to a public chatbot.
CyberFlash is DecodeVox's cybersecurity show. Here, we go beyond the headlines: we decode attacks, reveal how they work, and explain what they really change.
Another weakness was measured: between May and July, about 10% of the Codex traffic that should have been monitored was not. Context summaries slipped under the radar. OpenAI fixed it during the exercise.
So how do you get out of a machine with no network?
The agent starts with the normal route: the search engine it was given, then direct requests. The proxy blocks them. It probes the network and finds a poorly filtered DNS resolver. That service translates names into addresses. The agent slips its question into a domain name and, through a public delegation, reaches an outside chatbot.
What we know: the DNS hole is documented, two separate blocks were added, and the monitor waited for the end of each turn. What we don't know: how many agents did the same, whether it was ever used, and what capability it takes.
Three habits. Treat every agent as an untrusted user, with minimal scope. Filter all outbound traffic, DNS included, by default. And monitor it at every turn, not only when it hands back control.
A sandbox is not a security boundary. It is a door, and it has to be tested.
